We perceive the comet of Te Mawe as a manifestation of our tūpuna, the sacredness of Te Waiariki and the aspirations our tūpuna had for our mokopuna. It demonstrates the correlation between past and present, 'Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua. I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past' Notably, this whakataukī embodies our worldview and perspectives of time and space where the past, the present and the future are viewed as intertwined, and life as a continuous cosmic process.

The comet is depicted in the overall shape of the design reminding us that we come from greatness and to embody it as our Tūpuna once did.

The maunga on the edges represent the many maunga we have in our rohe that continue to look over us and are key wāhi rongonui within our boundaries.

The awa are represented in the gaps reminding us that they do not seperate us but keep us connected and revitalized.

The whetu in the middle pays homage to our korero tuku iho and navigation stories, knowing when we look up, we see the same stars our tūpuna once did.

Lastly our Kaitiaki, representing all of our Te Waiariki uri, that continue to uphold kaitiakitanga over our whenua, moana and each other.
